Marriage is a beautiful thing. It’s poetic, really. Hopeful lovers imagine a union with a soulmate, a union which lasts a lifetime. Isn’t that a lovely concept? And it is a concept. It’s completely the product of a society, the product of humanity’s designs on “how one ought to live.” The marriage concept changes with time, with differing cultures, with differing points of view. For example, marriage used to be merely an arrangement to unite families in a closer bond. Marriage also was used among family members to strengthen bonds. The bible tells us so – Abraham married his half sister. But, some dumb ass right-wing nut jobs want to preach that marriage needs to be how it is in the bible, and thus gay marriage should not be lawful. Oh really? You would have us all marry our siblings, cousins, etc.?
Honestly, I don’t care what other people do, so long as it doesn’t impinge on my own freedom. Gays can marry, Republicans can have gun collections, women can distort their bodies – knock yourselves out; I don’t give a shit. Where I have the problem is the Ted Cruzes of the world vowing to reverse the right of gays to marry. Where I have a problem is the Bobby Jindals of the world telling Louisiana clerks that they don’t have to give out marriage licenses they don’t believe in. So, Cruz thinks other people’s relationships are his business and Jindal thinks public officials should be able to discriminate at will. Awesome.
Cruz told the idiot Sean Hannity that these are some of the darkest times in the nation’s history. Are you that dumb, Cruz? So, two same-sex people deciding to wed is more heinous than the Salem Witch Trials? It’s sadder than the Trail of Tears? It’s more disgusting than the KKK? Just how far up your ass is that head of yours? And Jindal and Cruz are both vying for the Presidency – doesn’t that just pinch a nipple?
I am growing ever more fearful that our country is headed to the dark ages. While the legality of same-sex marriage seemed like a step in the right direction, the backlash from the likes of these bobble-heads gives me fear. The law could be reversed. The right to a safe abortion could be reversed. The right to be anything other than a God-fearing, country-loving, gun-toting, woman-hating asshat could be removed at any time.
