Islam is the second largest religion in the world, and the number of adherents grows every day. So, given that 1.62 billion people are Muslim, does it really stand to reason that all Muslims are jihadists trying to destroy the fabric of our great (ahem..*cough) nation? Can the rampant hatred of Islam and unfounded fear of brown people really be justified in any real way? No. Let me say it another way - Hell to the fucking no.
Look, I think Islam is stupid. But I also think Christianity, Judaism, Confucianism, and dozenalism are stupid. The point is not religion. The point is that there are a wide variety of people on this planet and some happen to be violent, kill-happy assholes. Mind you, there are kill-happy asshats in every religion and within every society. Throughout time, white America has alternately feared Chinese, Jews, Italians, Native Americans, etc. Every time one group of people fears/hates another group of people, they create a whole mythology around that group that's meant to perpetuate and justify ignorance. In the 19th century, for example, it was believed that the "Mongol blood" of Chinese meant that Asians were unable to be civilized. That's right - it was the blood that coursed through their veins that made them lesser people. Equally so, the size and shape of a black man's skull is what made him perfect for enslavement. Stupid justification for stupid acts. Is it really any different today?
The scope of the modern American mind is so shallow, that the majority of us are only able to focus on a very small area of socio-cultural landscape. To wit: Middle Easterners/Muslims and their supposed threat to American lives and culture. I'd like to go into the fact that it was America herself who created that hatred on both sides - made it and stirred it up like a fine bouillabaisse. But any way you slice it, it's just ignorance, and the mythology we've created for ourselves about Middle Eastern cultures and religions are meant to justify our own stupid actions.
